Where it starts
Anston Park Junior. Dinnington Comp. Then the world got hold of him.
Steve was born and raised in Dinnington when the pit was still the reason the village existed. He left school and went straight into work, and he kept going into work of one kind or another for the next fifty years hauling coal, pulling people out of swimming pools, standing at doors, knocking on them, and eventually gutting and rebuilding houses.
Somewhere in the middle of all that, in 1984, a local boy needed an electric wheelchair and nobody was coming to pay for it. Steve decided he would. That decision turned into a forty-year fundraising habit and a charity called Kids @ Heart.
The three books are his own account of all of it, in his own words, with nothing smoothed over. People who know him say that is exactly what they sound like.
"Hard as nails with a heart of gold"
- Matt Gleadall
